Poison Message. The conversation endpoint is not in a valid state for SEND.

Hi all, i searched everywhere but couldn't find any info on the following error that i'm currently receiving:

"The conversation endpoint is not in a valid state for SEND. The current endpoint state is 'DI'."

I understand that this is due to some problem in my send/receive protocol but how do i fix this problem so that i can continue with my testing? Right now i'm forced to drop my entire test database and reinstall everytime this message shows up because i can't send/receive any messages at that point. Is there anyway to get rid of it?

Thanks in advance. This is driving me nuts.

DI stands for DISCONNECTED INBOUND and the conversation goes into this state when the peer has ended the conversation. If you try to send on a conversation in this state you'll get this error. You need to establish a clear protocol on who'w ending the conversation and how, because what s likely happening one side (initiator?) issues the END CONVERSATION verb and ends the conversation while the target is still trying to respond.

|||I think i found a solution to my own problem.

This is from the Microsoft online book:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/8/5/f8520d64-f109-4111-b0b0-51f1f6d2d220/Rational_Press_Service_Broker_Sample.pdf

If you look at the example in Chapter 1, you will notice that only one end of the conversation

was ended. In Figure 2.3, you can see one conversation with a state of “DI” (meaning

“disconnected inbound”), indicating that the opposite endpoint was ended with an END

CONVERSATION command but this endpoint of the conversation hasn’t been ended yet.

The other conversation state is “ER” (or “error”) because it has been open long enough

that the timeout has expired and the conversation ended with an error. If you execute an

END CONVERSATION command specifying the conversation_handle for the row in

the sys.conversation_endpoints table, it will go away.

Remembering to end all conversations is a very important programming practice. If you

forget to do this, you will fi nd thousands of rows in the sys.conversation_endpoints table

after your application has run for awhile.

If anyone has other ideas then please let me know.

Cheers!!
|||Thanks Remus for the reply, here is my sending protocol:

declare @.dh uniqueidentifier;
declare @.Message nvarchar(500);

SET @.Message = N'<MessageTypes xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns="http://tempuri.org/"><TransactionID>12345</TransactionID><MessageType>Swap</MessageType><Source>OMS</Source><IsCancel>false</IsCancel></MessageTypes>';

BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION @.dh
FROM SERVICE ClientServiceOMS
TO SERVICE 'TranProcessorService'
ON CONTRACT TradeCon
WITH ENCRYPTION = OFF;

SEND ON CONVERSATION @.dh
MESSAGE TYPE MessageTypes(@.Message)

END CONVERSATION @.dh;

And here is my receiving protocol (I removed all error handling for simplicity):

CREATE PROCEDURE ServiceProc
AS
DECLARE @.MsgXml xml, @.MsgTypeName nvarchar(128),
@.dh uniqueidentifier, @.Message nvarchar(500);

SET @.ErrNS = 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/Error'
SET @.EndDlgNS = 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/EndDialog'

BEGIN TRAN;

WAITFOR (RECEIVE TOP(1)
@.MsgXml = CAST(message_body as xml),
@.MsgTypeName = message_type_name,
@.dh = conversation_handle
FROM ServiceQue) timeout 1000;

-- Send reply message
SET @.Message = N'<ResponseMessage><Message>Received</Message></ResponseMessage>';
SEND ON CONVERSATION @.dh
MESSAGE TYPE ResponseMessage(@.Message);

END CONVERSATION @.dh;
PRINT '(ServiceProc) Reply Message Sent Successfully.'

COMMIT TRAN

So are my "END CONVERSATION" statements in the correct place?

Thanks a lot.
|||Hello again, I just wanted to clairfy that the receiving procedure is called automatically by the receiving queue to process the messages. So i guess i'm not understanding exactly when to end the conversation.

The above receiving procedure is incorrect, here is the correct version:

CREATE PROCEDURE ServiceProc
AS
DECLARE @.MsgXml xml, @.MsgTypeName nvarchar(128),
@.dh uniqueidentifier, @.Message nvarchar(500);

BEGIN TRAN;

WAITFOR (RECEIVE TOP(1)
@.MsgXml = CAST(message_body as xml),
@.MsgTypeName = message_type_name,
@.dh = conversation_handle
FROM ServiceQue), TIMEOUT 1000;

-- Send reply message
SET @.Message = N'<ResponseMessage><Message>Received</Message></ResponseMessage>';
SEND ON CONVERSATION @.dh
MESSAGE TYPE ResponseMessage(@.Message);

END CONVERSATION @.dh;
PRINT '(ServiceProc) Reply Message Sent Successfully.'

COMMIT TRAN

I really appreciate all the help.

Thanks

For one, you are doing fire-and-forget and that has some problems, see here: http://blogs.msdn.com/remusrusanu/archive/2006/04/06/570578.aspx. Second, the target is trying to respond on a conversation that was already ended by the initiator (hence the error you're getting).

Remove the END CONVERSATION on the sending side, have the initiator wait for the response from the target and end it's side of the conversation after it received a response.

|||Thank you very much Remus, that article and your other articles were very helpful. I got everything working now. But even though all the conversations end up gracefully i still end up with an entry in the sys.conversation_endpoints queue on both database instances:

select state, state_desc from sys.conversation_endpoints

state state_desc
CD CLOSED

Do i need to clear this queue every now and then or should it automatically clear up when the conversations end?

|||

Hi, i found an answer to my question in the book "Pro SQL Server 2005 Service Broker" which i got over the weekend, great book. The answer is on page 59:

"As soon as you process the EndDialog message on the initiator side, the conversation will end on both sides and then discarded from memory. However, for security reasons, it takes about 30 minutes until the initiator's conversation endpoint is deleted from sys.conversation_enpoints catalog view."

Just how in the heck were we mortals supposed to figure this out by ourselves!! lol

POINT IN TIME RESTORE

When I try to restore a database with query analyser and point in time resto
re, I always obtain this error message : The log in this backup set terminat
es at LSN 69508000000440000001, which is too early to apply to the database.
A more recent log backup t
hat includes LSN 69508000000440300001 can be restored.
My request is : RESTORE DATABASE TEST1 FROM BBA with norecovery
RESTORE LOG TEST1 FROM BBA
WITH recovery, STOPAT = '2004-03-07 8:30:00'
I have the same problem with all my databases and if I look in my device BBA
, I can see that I start with a full backup on 2004-03-07 and I continue wit
h logs backup until 2004-03-13.
What's wrong ?I forgot to mention that my full backup were at 5:00 AM on 2004-03-07|||Is there only 1 tlog created upto "8:30" and after?
If there are multiple tlogs you'll have to issue something like...
restore database dbname.bak from bba with norecovery
restore log logname1.tlog from bba with norecovery
restore log logname2.tlog from bba with recovery, stopat = '2004-03-07 8:30:
00'

Craig.

To add on to craigs posting,
The POINT-IN-TIME recovery will work only if the database's Recovery moel is
set to "FULL" and the model is not
changed after theFULL database backup.
Steps:
1. Perform a transaction log backup of the original database (If you have
not performed one)
2. RESTORE DATABASE TEST1 FROM BBA (Give the correct backup file / device
name) WITH NORECOVERY
3. Restore the subsequent transaction log files in order of backup WITH
NORECOVERY option till the final transaction log file
4. In the the final transaction log restore mention WITH RECOVERY and
STOPAT='date and time'

would like to accomplish but not quite.
I have a perfefctly good database with a .mdf and a .ldf file. The
recovery model is FULL. It was a new database a few weeks ago for
developing a new product.
We entered all kinds of info into it before we realized we were not
backing it up. Today we erased all the data...oops..
So I have a good .mdf and a full .ldf, I do a backup of both (wrong
thing)? And I try to restore using the cdoe I have seen here before..
RESTORE DATABASE mydatabase FROM DISK='c:\mybackup\pnedata' WITH
NORECOVERY;
RESTORE LOG PNEBilling FROM DISK='c:\mybackup\pnedata' WITH RECOVERY,
STOPAT = 'Mar 18, 2004 10:00 AM';
This runs without error but restores the database to its CURRENT state
which is empty of data!
If I run the same from Enterprise Manager and I check the "Point in
time" it will not allow me to select anything but today.
It seems that I should be able to do this since I have a full .ldf
file but the method is beyond my technical skills.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Tim|||You haven't provided us with exact information of what you have, and at
which point in time those backups (loosely speaking) were taken.

> We entered all kinds of info into it before we realized we were not

OK, so what we need to know is, compared to this point in time (when you
erased all data), what file backups (ldf, mdf) and database backups (BACKUP
DATABASE) and transaction log backups (BACKUP LOG) you have. Again, put it
on a time line compared to the erase of the data.

> So I have a good .mdf and a full .ldf, I do a backup of both (wrong
> thing)?
You generally don't do backup of the underlying database files in SQL
Server. Use BACKUP DATABASE and BACKUP LOG instead.
Then you continue to say that you use the RESTORE command, but you haven't
given us the information about when you did the BACKUP DATABASE and BACKUP
LOG.
You are probably toast, though. My guess is that you have some old file
level backup. And after the disaster, you did BACKUP DATABASE and BACKUP
LOG. You then put back those old database files, but want to come closer to
the point of disaster. So you do the RESTORE DATABASE. And we don't need to
go no further, because that put the database in the same state as it was
when the backup command was taken (which was after the point of disaster).
You really need to read the sections about backup and restore in Books
Online to understand how these things work in SQL Server. If you want more
help with this particular situation, please provide more information.

Thanks for trying to help a dummy
You are right on many fronts
a) I need more knowledge in BOL
b) I didn't decribe clearly, due to "a"
Here is the timeline
1- create database
2- enter data
3- erase data
4 - enterprise manager backup database, backup transaction log
5- restore database with norecovery
6- restore log with recovery, stopat (date time before data erased)
I use osql to run the job, the job runs but all the data is still gone
If I run the same restore from enterprise manager I am unable to
select a date prior to the time of the 1st transaction log backup.
I guess that is the point, you have to have a database backup from
BEFORE the point in time you want to restore to...
I am toast eh?

Ok here is what I understand:

You are using SQL CE 2.0 version Database on device Pocket PC 2002 and trying to sync with SQL Server 2000 SP2. However the title of the thread goes with SP4. It is confusing to me, which one is correct?

Irrespective of all of this, I would recommend you to go thru the page http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/sqlmobile/connectivity-tools.mspx very carefully and I am sure you would be knowing how sqlcereplication works at the end of the read.

1) I think SQL Server 2000 SP < SP3a are not supported by Microsoft anymore. So, please upgrade to SP4.

PLZ help: problem with a certain query

I have this easy query , but the MSSQL server give me an error (Incorrect syntax near ',')

my query is:

--

SELECT Book_Name FROM Books

WHERE (Year,Faculty) =

(SELECT Year,Faculty FROM Books

WHERE Book_Id =100);

--

its seems the error because this line: WHERE (Year,Faculty) =

I don't what the problem!! this query is legal in mysql but not in mssql.

when I tried this one:

SELECT Book_Name FROM Books

WHERE Year =

(SELECT Year FROM Books

WHERE Book_Id =100);

--

its succeed ...

why the first not?

please help or give me any advice....

thanks in advance

Use the following query...

SELECT Book_Name FROM Books Join

(SELECT Year,Faculty FROM Books

WHERE Book_Id =100) D on Books.Year = D.Year and Books.Faculty = D.Faculty

|||

that great ..... thanks you.

but what I can do if I want to use "not in" instead of "=":

the new query will be:

--

SELECT Book_Name FROM Books
WHERE (Year,Faculty) not in
(SELECT Year,Faculty FROM Books
WHERE Book_Id =100);

-

|||

use the following query..

SELECT Book_Name FROM Books Left Outer Join

(SELECT Year,Faculty FROM Books

WHERE Book_Id =100) D on Books.Year = D.Year and Books.Faculty = D.Faculty

Where D.Year is NULL or D.Faculty is NULL

-or

SELECT Book_Name FROM Books Where Cast(Year as varchar) + '-' + Cast(Faculty as varchar) NOT IN

(SELECT Cast(Year as varchar) + '-' + Cast(Faculty as varchar) FROM Books

WHERE Book_Id =100)

|||

thank you a lot.

Worked for me

What did you specify in Query Analyzer for server? "\\localhost"? That's
not a magic name. Try . (a single dot) or "(local)".

Plug-in algorithm shell complilation error

I'm trying to create plug-in algorithm using tutorial from Max Chickering and Raman Iyer. I follow steps very carefully and as far as I know my code is exactly the same as Completed shell solution in source files of tutorial. But when I try to compile factory.cpp file I get this error:
Error 1 error C2259: 'ATL::CComObject<Base>' : cannot instantiate abstract class e:\development\ms visual studio 2005\vc\atlmfc\include\atlcom.h 1799

When I compile completed shell solution from source files it's OK. Do you have any ideas, where the problem could be?

Thank you

This most likely indicates that you haven't provided implementation for all the abstract methods from IDMAlgorithm interface. Unfortunately, the error does not point you to that, but rather fails in the code which instantiates the class (cannot instantiate an abstract class).

Hope this helps

Shuvro

The error window of VS only includes this error fragment. However, if you check the Output window after the failed compilation, you will find details about the virtual method that lacks implementation.

Once you find the name of the missing method, you can search it (VS Ctrl+Shift+F, Find in Files) in the original sample source code. Make sure the file containing the code for that method is included and available in your copy of the sample

Hope this helps

Can anyone guide me on resolving this issue??

Thanks.I'm guessing this question belongs in the SQL Server forum. If not the moderators will move it to a more appropriate forum.

Sometimes they never come back to view respond at all ... :)|||Hi,
Thanks to all for the suggestions provided, specially the last one!!
Wel, the answers was needed a little bit urgently and so i thought that i could get a reply from this forum.
I was able to fix the problem occuring. As stated earlier, it was a problem related to the access only...
"The rules for accessing other users objects are different when COMPILING
procedures/functions/packages.
Grants must be given directly, not through a role, to the compiling
usercode
(DBA is a role).
Normal rules apply when executing"
....
So i had to Grant privileges to one of the access_role to be able to execute procedure so it should work now.

Thanks anyways.

Sweety

Appearantly you are getting an error during the execution. Having a try / catch block, with no actions or error retrieval functionalty will keep the error under the covers.

Please post the error message in here which ca be retrieved by reading the eio.Message and post the script which is used for the creation of the table.

BTW if you want to create a table you could use SMO rather than doing a script composing and executing this against the database.

HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

Hello,

I tried to print the message , I got " Incorrect syntax near '0'"..can some one tell me what does it mean...

This is a syntax error in your query. Post the query (commandtext of the command here)

HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

This is your mistake: You have put a space after col so your create table command looks like create table (col 0 varchar(20), ... which is not correct, remove the space and it will start working.

for (int i = 0; i < col_head + 1; i++)

{

if (i == 0)

datatype += "(col " + i + " varchar(20),";

else if (i + 1 == col_head+1)

datatype += "col" + i + " varchar(20))";

else

datatype += "col" + i + " varchar(20),";

}

Is this start account a member of he local administrators group?
What security authentication is the SQL instance configured to use? Is it
Windows or Mixed? I'd set the service startup account for SQLServerAgent to
the local system account, and try to start the SQL Agent service.

thanks a lot for your help.|||You need to find out which Service Account Agent is using (EM, Management,
Properties).
Then you need to go to the security tab in SQL Server, logins, and for that
account (or a group that the account is a member of), edit it and on the
server roles tab, make it member of syadmins.
