group in Enterprise Manager. tnxright click on the server name, click on Edit sql server

Point in Time RESTORE
I have SQL Server Standard edition (that was installed
after un-installing the Enterprise evaluation copy using
add/remove programs). On Retore screen, the option "Point
in Time' is grayed out totally. How can I make this option
usable?

your database must be set to "Full Recovery". To set this option using
Enterprise Manager--> (1) Right Click your database and then click

PLS HELP: Database is marked as (loading) after restore
Hi,
We just restored a database to SQL Server 2000 and now if i go to
Enterprise Manager i see that database with "(loading)" on the right.
When i click on expnand sign, i see "No Items"?
When i try to see it's properties i get this message:
"Error 927: Database "DBName" can not be opened. It is in the middle of
a restore."
But how come - i've seen the restore finished successfully.
Any ideas?

What do you mean that you have 'seen the restore finished successfully'?
Does that mean you were able to use the database after the restore?
It's possible you ran the restore with NORECOVERY.
Try using Query Analyzer and recovering the database:
RESTORE DATABASE DBName WITH RECOVERY

Thanks for your responses, guys. I tried that but got an error saying that database file is restored
only partially so command acn't be completed or something like that.
It seems to me that the backup file is somehow invalid, as we never had any problems with another
clients' backups ever. I'm going to ask them to send me another backup ad we'll see then|||Perhaps you were sent a backup which didn't contain all the filesgroups for the database. That can
be on possible reason.

First of all, as MVP Tibor suggested, please make sure you have contained
all the filegroups for the database.
Secondly, if the database file located remotely, please copy them to local
and then try to resotre again.

Plot Table Relationships
Hello,
I am looking to print the table structure of a Microsoft SQL Server 7 database through the Enterprise Manager Utility. I would like to print it to a plotter but the print options in the Enterprise Manager are inadequate. I believe I will need to use another program to manipulate the object prior to plot due to its size. I have the following tools available:
VB6
Autocad
(Do not have Adobe Writer)
Is there a way to get this print object to Autocad or even as a bitmap?

I got desperate the other day and started to write a small SQL script to query the information and dump it to a HTML file using 'sp_makewebtask'.
I am looking to print the table structure of a Microsoft SQL Server 7 database through the Enterprise Manager Utility. I would like to print it to a plotter but the print options in the Enterprise Manager are inadequate. I believe I will need to use another program to manipulate the object prior to plot due to its size. I have the following tools available:
VB6
Autocad
(Do not have Adobe Writer)
Is there a way to get this print object to Autocad or even as a bitmap?

Re-apply SQL Server 2000 SP3a onto the machine. If that does not solve it,
apply the latest Windows SP on you machine. mmc is a windows application and
SQL server just uses it for EM.

Please help, database will not truncate free space at end of file
I'll explain the process, then I'll explain the problem.
SQL Server Enterprise Edition, Windows NT, SP2
We have a main database server A, and a report server B.
This is all done through Enterprise Manager:
We reindex database A, which causes it to grow in size, backup the
transaction log, shrink the database, truncate free space at the end of the
file, back it up, then restore it to the report server. We HAVE to shrink it
because there's little room left on server B for the database.
We did this same process recently, however the free space at the end of the
database file will not truncate. It did before, but not now.
I've read some of the articles posted, and I'm shy about trying any of them
since this is main production and would be bad, to say the least, if anything
should happen. One article I read said that I should do this in QA with a
TRUNCATEONLY switch, will the data be affected?
If any of you have a simple explanation or help I would really appreciate it.

It sounds like you have an open transaction in the database. What does DBCC
OPENTRAN() say for that db? The process you are going thru is very flawed
in that the shrink process undoes most of what you tried to accomplish with
the reindexing in the first place. The proper answer is get more disk space
on the reporting server and you can alleviate that whole process and have a
much better operation overall.

Yep. Or, to be more specific, it will fragment the indexes. Or to be even more specific, it will
move pages towards the beginning of the files, page-by-page, possibly resulting in an index which is
more fragmented than it was before the shrink (assuming you had a contiguous index before the
shrink). This is easy to test...

transaction log, shrink the database, truncate free space at the end of the
file, back it up, then restore it to the report server. We HAVE to shrink it
because there's little room left on server B for the database.
We did this same process recently, however the free space at the end of the
database file will not truncate. It did before, but not now.
I've read some of the articles posted, and I'm shy about trying any of them
since this is main production and would be bad, to say the least, if anything
should happen. One article I read said that I should do this in QA with a
TRUNCATEONLY switch, will the data be affected?
If any of you have a simple explanation or help I would really appreciate it.

OPENTRAN() say for that db? The process you are going thru is very flawed
in that the shrink process undoes most of what you tried to accomplish with
the reindexing in the first place. The proper answer is get more disk space
on the reporting server and you can alleviate that whole process and have a
much better operation overall.

Yep. Or, to be more specific, it will fragment the indexes. Or to be even more specific, it will
move pages towards the beginning of the files, page-by-page, possibly resulting in an index which is
more fragmented than it was before the shrink (assuming you had a contiguous index before the
shrink). This is easy to test...
